At our most recent Coffee Hour Chat, we explored what it really means to put young people at the center of learning and to step back from the habits and pressures of “school.” The conversation reminded us that school is everywhere: in cultural rhythms, in our own memories, even in the ways kids play. For some families, a bit of structure still provides comfort and stability; for others, too much of it feels limiting. What matters most is flexibility, personalization, and the courage to choose what works for each child. Participants shared powerful stories about kids advocating for different tutors, families balancing outside requirements with self-direction, and parents finding their own voices to push back against rigid systems. Again and again, we returned to one core truth: centering the learner means honoring individuality, agency, and humanity over one-size-fits-all expectations. It was moving to hear how this practice doesn’t just shape children’s experiences, it transforms adults too. Parents and caregivers spoke about the bravery it takes to speak truth, to trust children, and to create a home base rooted in love rather than coercion.

Daniel T. Moeller, M.Ed.
Having worked in and around early childhood education for the last 15 years, Dan stumbled upon the concept of unschooling. He found the practice and theory of unschooling to agree with all of the current research on early education he encountered in his master’s program while also disagreeing with a lot of what he witnessed in schools all over. With the full backing of his son and wife, Dan started unschooling his son. Early on, Dan’s son Kai came up with the idea to start a podcast. They made the idea a reality and “Unschooling with Kai” was born. Each episode centers on one of Kai’s interests (e.g. wild cats, Delta Force, tardigrades, etc.). Together, Dan and Kai research each topic and present the fascinating things they learn. “Unschooling with Kai” is now in season six and shows no sign of slowing. While not wrapped up in the intellectual world of unschooling, Dan enjoys reading, playing drums, skateboarding, all kinds of movement, enjoying nature, and spending time with his family.
Join our next event with Outschool on Wednesday 10/8: “Nurturing Individual Thinkers in Outschool”
Outschool invites families to explore how its online classes can support Independent Meaningful Learning at home. In this workshop, you’ll see real examples, hear family stories, and leave with practical strategies for creating curiosity-driven, learner-led environments.
